Day 4

Mary had a pretty good night. She slept for the most part from 9:30-2:00 then again from 6:00-9:00. During the night we were able to isolate the itching to the new oral drug Loratab so we gave her Benadryl but that didn't work and unfortunately (I will explain later) they gave her Narcan which did seem to stop the itching and she was able to go back to sleep after reading, watching TV and playing on the iPad.

In the morning she had another dose of Loratab and a Narcan chaser. She was fine and we had a mellow morning just the two of us. She didn't want to eat breakfast but once she tasted it ate the best meal so far. Sunday mornings are quiet around the hospital.

Daddy and Little Sister showed up around 11 bearing Mothers Day gifts.

Then the Resident came by. He was very good. I think there is a big difference between new Residents and 4th year Residents. He didn't push us at all to go home today. (FYI our friend who is a doctor let us know the lingo to discuss staying longer is uncontrolled pain management and Physical Therapy needs.) The Resident was concerned we were giving Mary Narcan because it counteracts the Loratab! Ughh! But I guess its like fevers, it doesn't matter the actual fever but rather the child's temperament. Even though theoretically Mary should have been experiencing more pain she was actually fine. The Resident switched her RX to Tylenol with Codeine but we had trouble getting it filled because we mistakenly mentioned she has a minor allergy to red dye. (the nurse pointed out if an allergy hasn't been officially diagnosed its best not to mention it. The hospital is the best place to verify an allergy.)

The Resident mentioned infections rarely appear the frst 2 weeks.

He also mentioned anti anxiety meds. I am confident that would have been helpful yesterday when Mary had fear of pain. Luckily she didn't have that on Sunday.

Grandma and poppy arrived, i grabbed lunch and i left with Little Sister to go home and shower. Then i dropped Little Sister off for a play date and returned to the hospital to do some physical therapy with Mary.

when i arrived i learned Mary tried to use a commode next to the bed instead of a bed pan for the 1st time and it turned out to be too much. Her heart rate dropped and she needed to rest. The nurse gave her meds (suppository) to help next time and it was very successful the 2nd time. She felt so much better.

After her Daddy left for home we finally got the Tylenol with codeine RX. As soon as she took it she started to experience a lot of real pain. We counted down the 15 minutes it was supposed to take to take effect then called the nurse for help. I have had 2 kids but have never witnessed a delivery. Marys pain tonight seemed just like delivery pain (her leg muscles were contracting/spasming) so they gave her Ativan through her IV. You could tell it worked immediately. Thank goodness because on the pain chart of 0-10, she said it went from a 10, 14, to 120 (that is not a typo). And just like a delivery breathing and holding my hand didn't help.

The nurse thought she would go right to sleep and she was looking very relaxed but she is so addicted to words with friends she just learned today that she stayed awake playing with her classmate and grandma.

then i successfully helped her use the commode next to the bed instead of a bed pan along with a nurse's help. Whew. Now i am feeling a lot more confident about going home. Mary finally ate some fruits and veggies, we got her ready for bed, she journaled while i blogged and at 10:45 i called lights out.

We hope she gets her pain under control ASAP.
Hopefully she will have a better day today.
